SPARTA — Marion Pleasant took advantage of a porous Highland defense to gain 595 yards en route to a 56-6 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference victory over the Scots on Friday night.
Highland (1-2) gave up 202 yards and three touchdowns on just 5-of-8 passing to Spartans QB Colin Wood, plus another 72 yards on just two completions from receiver Devlin McDaniel. Pleasant (2-1) also averaged eight yards per carry on 40 rushes (321 yards).
The Scots had a good night running with 214 yards on 42 carries, but Josh Gahm completed nearly as many passes to the Spartans defense (2) as he did to teammates (3). He was 3-of-21 for 51 yards for the game.
Pleasant picked apart Highland from the first quarter on. Wood completed a pair of touchdown passes in the first 5:06 of the first period, a 29 yarder and a 28 yarder to McDaniel which gave the Spartans a 14-0 lead. Later in the first, Jordan Kelley picked up an errant Gahm pass to score from 24 yards out, and Pleasant was up 21-0. The Spartans scored once more before halftime on a 1-yard run from Wood with 10:14 to play in the second quarter, and led 28-0 at the break.
