DANVILLE — Danville football coach Ed Honabarger preached to his team at halftime to finish — finish their runs, finish their tackles, finish their drives.
After a first half which saw the Blue Devils dominate the statistics, but not the scoreboard, the players took their coach’s words to heart in the second. Danville exploded for three touchdowns in the third quarter to turn a close game into a 32-6 blowout victory over visiting Grove City Christian.
“It was just execution. We finished drives. That’s the biggest difference,” said Honabarger.
Danville’s new spread offensive attack was clicking on all cylinders early in the game, but the Devils were unable to crack the end zone. The first drive stalled at the Eagles’ 28-yard line and the second halted at GCC’s 10 because of a fumble.
Thankfully, the Devils’ defense was in complete shutdown mode. Grove City Christian (2-1) came into the game averaging 400 yards rushing in its first two games, but the Devils put the clamps on them early. The Eagles got just two first downs in the first 16 minutes of the game.
