FREDERICKTOWN — It came down to one play and a game-saving tackle.
Deep in its own territory with a four point lead and less than four minutes to go in the game, the Fredericktown Freddies defense desperately needed a stop against the Lucas Cubs. The Freddies got just that from linebacker Joey Dunn and went on to win their nonconference home opener, 34-30.
On fourth down, the Cubs were driving at the Freddies’ 3-yard line. Lucas running backs Nicholas Swainhart and Levi Harris had been pounding away at the Freddies’ defense all night long. On fourth down, the Cubs ran Swainhart left with the ball. Dunn was waiting and dragged him down to give the Freddies the ball at their own 2.
“It felt great,” said Dunn. “We finally got a stop when we needed to. It was hard the entire game but we fought through it and all the adversity.”
“That was the play of the game,” said Fredericktown coach Brian Baum. “We hadn’t stopped (Lucas.) We had not stopped them all night until, finally, with fourth and three, down at the goal line, we finally made a stop.”
That was the pivotal play in a game that featured no punts from either team. Both offenses were virtually unstoppable throughout the game.
The Cubs took the opening possession 60 yards on 11 plays with Swainhart and Harris leading the way. Swainhart picked up a pair of first downs and finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Cubs ahead, 6-0.
