There are versatile applications of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the agricultural sector, according to Mary Lou Staats, co-owner of Danville’s Valley ATVs.

Staats has worked for three decades in ATV sales.

She said over that time the vehicles have become indispensable tools for farmers, providing convenience and efficiency in various tasks.

“(ATVs) simplify some things and reduce wear and tear on their bigger trucks or tractors and maybe get things to them faster or, make it easier and more comfortable, easier to get it out of. Maybe a guy can not get back up on his big tractor, but he can slide in and out of one of these side by side ATVs,” Staats told Mount Vernon News.

Farmers across different sectors utilize ATVs for a multitude of purposes.

Horse owners find them handy for transporting hay bales and hauling feed, while beef and cattle farmers use them for fence repairs and cattle herding.

Grain farmers rely on ATVs to transport personnel and equipment to combine or deliver parts for repairs.

ATVs offer significant benefits to farmers and can facilitate faster and more comfortable transportation across farms. Moreover, they provide accessibility to remote areas and facilitate farm-to-farm travel, particularly on country roads where larger vehicles may be impractical.

Staats, who resides in a rural area surrounded by farms, emphasizes the deep-rooted connection between farming communities and the use of ATVs.

At Valley ATVs, they offer a range of models from top brands like Polaris and Can-Am, catering to diverse needs and preferences of farmers.

“Some are just a basic model with a roll cage on them up to one that's fully enclosed from the factory with heat heating there and electric windows. And so you can get them anywhere in between now,” Staats said.

The business has witnessed significant changes over the decades, particularly in technology integration.

Modern ATVs come equipped with advanced features such as backup cameras, front cameras, sensors, and GPS systems, enhancing safety and efficiency on the farm.

Reflecting on the impact of ATVs, Staats highlights their versatility, emphasizing that with a bit of creativity, they can assist in nearly any agricultural task.

“If you think outside the box, I guess they can help you do just about anything,” Staats said.

As farms evolve and embrace technological advancements, Valley ATVs remain committed to providing farmers with innovative solutions to enhance productivity and efficiency in their operations.
